Bringing Comfort, Connection and Joy Through Respite Care

Nov 2, 2026

For more than two years, Du’Praiseja Tejeda has provided trusted support to families across the Bay Area. As an Easterseals Northern California respite associate, she gives caregivers a chance to rest and recharge while creating fun, meaningful experiences for children with intellectual or developmental disabilities (I/DD).

Easterseals Northern California’s in-home respite services provide temporary care and support for children with the intent of giving their parents or caregivers a break from daily responsibilities — allowing caregivers to take time for themselves, attend to personal needs or manage other responsibilities.

Turning Compassion Into a Career

The opportunity to work one-on-one with children and their families first attracted Du’Praiseja to respite services. For her, building genuine connections and helping others has always been at the heart of her work.

“It’s a really fun job,” Du’Praiseja said. “I love it, especially because of the relationships I’ve built with the kids and their parents.”

It’s rewarding to see the children develop new skills, solve everyday problems and become increasingly independent, she added.

“Watching the kids grow up and reach their milestones means a lot to me,” she said. “I’m so proud of them.”

And there is no shortage of ways to make those moments happen. Whether they’re playing games, watching movies, or enjoying a snack, each activity gives the children an opportunity to learn and spend time doing things they enjoy in the comfort of their own home.

Du’Praiseja also sees firsthand how respite services benefit entire families. By stepping in to care for a child, even if it’s just a few hours a week, she gives caregivers some much-needed time away to focus on their own wellbeing. When caregivers return, they feel refreshed and are better equipped to support their family.

“I’m a strong believer that people need time for themselves,” Du’Praiseja said. “Parents who have a child with I/DD deserve a break, and I’m so happy to give them one.”

Ensuring Families Receive the Support They Need

If caregivers are experiencing burnout or need a short break from the daily demands of caregiving, Du’Praiseja recommends exploring respite services.

“A lot of parents don’t even know this program exists,” she said. “I encourage them to reach out to their Regional Center and see what’s available. I wouldn’t want anyone to lose out on support simply because they didn’t know it was there.”
