For many parents — especially those raising a child with an intellectual or developmental disability — finding time to run errands, have dinner out or simply rest can feel like a luxury.
As an Easterseals Northern California Respite Associate, Dexie Santiago helps make that time possible. She gives caregivers the opportunity to take a well-deserved break while ensuring their loved ones receive the care and attention they need.
Building on a Foundation of Care
Dexie began her journey with Easterseals Northern California more than seven years ago as a Behavior Interventionist in the Applied Behavior Analysis Program. With support from the organization, she went on to earn her Registered Behavior Technician® (RBT®) certification before transitioning to the In-Home Respite Program in late 2025.
“While I thoroughly enjoyed my role as an RBT and found it very rewarding, working in respite has given me a unique level of autonomy,” Dexie said.
Several times each week, Dexie provides individualized, in-home care to her clients, giving caregivers a chance to focus on their own wellbeing and other important aspects of life. These breaks play a crucial role in helping caregivers prevent burnout, manage stress and maintain a healthier, more balanced environment for their entire family.
“Caregivers have so little free time,” Dexie said. “Most of their day is spent taking care of their child, so it feels good knowing that I’ve helped lighten their workload.”
Empowering Clients to Explore, Learn and Play
During each respite session, Dexie creates a safe, fun and engaging experience for her clients. Whether it’s a trip to the zoo, a game of I Spy or practicing everyday life skills like tying their shoes, clients are empowered to choose the activities that interest them most.
Through these interactions, Dexie has watched her clients become more social and attentive. At the same time, the clients and families she serves have made a lasting impact on her.
“Being around my clients allows me to experience the joy of childhood again,” Dexie said. “I genuinely enjoy the moments spent with them and their families.”
Staying Connected While Working Independently
Although much of Dexie’s work is done independently, she says she’s never without support. She credits her manager and teammates for fostering a strong sense of connection and collaboration. Through regular online check-ins and communication, they share ideas, exchange advice and celebrate successes together.
“Even though we’re not physically in the same space, I know my team is always there for me,” Dexie said. “They’ve been instrumental in supporting me and helping ensure we deliver the best possible care to our clients.”
A Reminder for Caregivers
Having worked closely with many families, Dexie has seen the demands that caregivers face every day. The good news is that they don’t have to do it alone. She encourages caregivers to ask for help when they need it.
“There’s no shame in requesting assistance,” she said. “It’s also a good idea to slow down, take a break and prioritize your mental wellbeing.”
